I'm free!
We have a new heightened awareness in our house after a recent incident. It was a Saturday afternoon and we were all just kind of lounging around the house doing our own thing. Kevin was in and out of the house a lot because he was working on stuff in the garage. Serophina was by his side the whole time, like she usually is when he’s home. Saioa spent half her time outside with Kevin and then inside with me.
Well, there was a moment when I heard Kevin say he was going to brush Kona. I was distracted with something else so a little while …

As Ben and I are traveling to see family this week, I’m a little concerned about sleeping arrangements. We’re staying with my parents, and we’ll be sleeping in my sister’s room — Ben in the pack-and-play, me in the bed.
Of course, because I over-analyze everything, sleeping somewhere other than our own house brings up a whole new crop of worries. The biggest thing I stress about is that Ben still wakes up at night, usually once. I eventually stopped going to get him, and from what I can tell, he usually goes back to sleep fairly quickly. He’ll cry for a minute or two, and then it stops and I …

This is her insisting she wear her sister's rain coat.
Have you ever thought about what our lives would be like if we gave in to every toddler demand? Mine would be eating junk all the time, the tv would always be on, she’d stay in the same clothes for days and days and we’d never leave the house because she hates getting in her car seat. Thank God I’m in charge and not her!
There are a few things that I do give in on, when she really, really insists on something and I feel it’s harmless or I don’t have the energy to fight back:
1. Wearing a …
One day this week while Nathan was at preschool, Emily, Joshua, and I went to the mall to look at something. We parked near the Barnes and Noble since that was near our shopping destination. Plus, I love books, and walking through bookstores makes me happy.
On our way back to the car, as we headed through Barnes and Noble, we made a little pit stop at their new toy section. If you haven’t been yet, you really should. They have a lot of interesting, fun toys there. They also have a Duplo building table. That’s a major hit in my little crowd.
With Nathan’s birthday coming up, I wanted to see …
At a recent function my husband and I attended among friends, I was posed with this question amidst casual conversation with someone who I’ve known for years. “So, what do you do all day?” For any stay at home mom, this can feel like the “kiss of death,” unearthing negative thoughts and feelings and maybe the occasional flying object. I, of course, cannot remember my response, since my mind was working overtime to keep myself from delivering a series of attacks armed only with my passion for what I do and my words. The poser of the question is a father, who works full time, as does his wife. Their …

This week, Ben and I are going back to my hometown of Jacksonville, FL for a visit. Usually, I drive, but this time, we’re going to fly which brings up a whole new crop of worries.
Ben, obviously, has never been on a plane before, and the entire situation has me extremely anxious. I have a seat for myself and a seat for Benjamin on the plane, which will be nice. I also am able to bring two bags to check, and two carry-ons.
One of the things I absolutely have to bring is his pack-and-play, so he has somewhere to sleep, which means I have to cram everything into one suitcase: …
This week, Joshua had his eighteen-month well-baby visit. While I really don’t like going to the pediatrician’s office, I am always curious to see how they’re growing and developing. It *almost* makes up for the ridiculously long wait.
There were no major surprises this time. Joshua is still big. Twenty-eight pounds, two ounces and nearly thirty-four inches big. He’s at least seventy-fifth percentile across the board, with his height coming in closer to ninetieth percentile. No wonder I feel like I’m feeding a bottomless pit – he is one!
They went through the standard developmental questions – how many words does he speak, does he know at least two body parts, is …

It is often very frustrating living in a small town like this one. There is nothing to do around here. It’s the perfect little community if you are looking to retire in a quiet area. Because that’s exactly what it is…. quiet. Our biggest event comes around once a year and that’s the Seafood Festival. There are a couple little museums, if you can even call it that. We’ve been there endless times and have memorized every inch of them. The History Place, as charming as it is, takes about 10 minutes to walk through. The Maritime Museum takes …
First off, I am so excited to be joining the MomTalk community and the CuddleBugs blog. I can’t wait to share my stories and read about everyone else’s roller-coaster experiences. Together, we will grow and learn from each other.
Originally, born in Rochester Minnesota, I was raised in Richmond Virginia, a beautiful city and wonderful place to spend a childhood. I ran off to college, armed with as much common sense as I thought I would ever need and settled in at East Carolina University where I met my soon to be husband, Daniel. We married shortly after graduating and planted ourselves in Raleigh to begin our lives together. Daniel and …
To say that Joshua likes food would be like saying fish like water or that birds like to fly. He doesn’t just like food – he loves and adores food. Little can bring him comfort on a sad day more than a good snack, except, of course, a snuggle from Mom. He loves to eat.
For a long time, he was content to let me feed him. It was quick, the food arrived at the intended destination, and he didn’t have to work. Over the last few weeks, though, he’s decided that this is no longer an acceptable arrangement. He wants to feed himself. And not just the easy things like …
